Improving people’s lives with the world’s best transportation calls for more than just cars — that’s why we’re adding scooters to the Lyft lineup. We believe scooter networks are a last-mile solution to fusing Santa Monica’s rail and bus networks with wherever you’re headed.

How to ride
- Kick-start the ground twice to get going.
- Press the throttle on the right-hand side of the handlebar to speed up.
- Hold down the brake on the left-hand side of the handlebar to slow down.
- One person per scooter — passengers prohibited.
- Weee!
Where to ride
Please always ride your scooter in the street or in a bike lane when it’s available. Don’t ever ride on sidewalks — it’s dangerous and a nuisance for pedestrians. Scooters are also not allowed on the Santa Monica beach bike path.
Follow traffic laws
Santa Monica traffic laws apply to cars, bicycles, and, yep: scooters. This means you must stop at red lights and stop signs, ride in the same direction as traffic, leave crosswalks free and clear for pedestrians, and, of course, yield to pedestrians. Always.
Pack your helmet
California law requires everyone to wear a helmet when riding a scooter. Not optional, sorry. (But don’t worry — helmet hair is cool now.)
Parking your scooter
Please be mindful of others when parking your scooter — use bike racks or park by the curb at all times. Don't block sidewalks, pathways, bus stops, or wheelchair ramps. Please also do not park on the Santa Monica Boardwalk or on the beach bike path. The city of Santa Monica also has very specific rules around parking your scooter.
Reserve before you go
Ensure that your scooter will actually be there when you arrive. Reserve a scooter ahead of time and we’ll hold your scooter for up to 15 minutes. You’ll be charged a per minute rate while the scooter is reserved. Once you unlock the scooter, you’ll also be charged an unlock fee.
Hit pause
See a friend? Latte (with oat milk, please) intermission? Just tap Lock in your Lyft app to lock your scooter (you’ll be charged a per minute rate while the scooter is locked) until you're ready again. We’ll wait.
