What makes Lyft Design so special? Hands down, it’s our people. We’re a team of passionate, talented, empathetic folks committed to making a positive impact.

Spend some time with Amy, one of our content designers based in California.

What do you love most about being a content design manager at Lyft?

Two things sprung to mind, so I hope it’s okay to tack on an extra thing I love.

The first is cliche, but true–the people. All of the best parts of my work boil down to the connections I get to foster with people I love working alongside. Day to day that means the choices I make as a leader are never abstract. They’re always tied to people I care about.

The second thing I love most are the types of problems I get to solve. As a content designer at Lyft, there’s lots of opportunities to shape the discipline. I love working to define what good content design collaboration and partnership looks like. Given it’s a newer discipline, I love being part of an organization that allows for creative problem solving and autonomy.

What made you choose content design as a career?

Well, I really stumbled into content design. The obvious throughline in my career has always been writing. I started off as a litigator before I realized that the courtroom would never be the place for me. From there I found my way to tech and eventually learned about content design.

Content design immediately felt like the perfect blend of my skills–especially collaboration, strategy, and of course language. UX thinking felt pretty intuitive and I was happy to flex those overly-honed advocacy skills for our users.

A few years back I consciously decided on the management track as my next step. It wasn’t a tough decision. I love mentoring and supporting professional growth. Plus, I weirdly love thinking about organizations. That said, I’m a pretty passionate believer that we should move away from management as the only way to advance in your career.

How do you stay creative?

I’ve accepted that my creativity ebbs and flows–or perhaps my interest in my creativity is what changes day to day. Regardless, the two biggest things that help me stay creative are reading and constraints. The more writing I read, the better writer and storyteller I am. And nothing makes me less creative than a blank page. Give me limitations!

Any advice on how to get started in content design?

1) Read as much as you can! There’s lots of wonderful, free resources out there and if you’re an experienced writer, many of the content design principles may come naturally.
2) Understand what good design is and is not; understand UX principles and be able to apply them to your writing.
3) Reach out to other content designers. Our field is filled with thoughtful, generous, and kind folks. Get to know them when you can!

If you could take a Lyft ride with anyone, who would it be?

Either Rihanna or Rachel Cusk. This is a wild pairing, but what can I say? You asked.
