A joint effort to promote health equity

At Lyft Healthcare, our goal is to help people lead healthier lives by ensuring everyone who needs a ride gets a ride, regardless of age, income, or ability. Since 2016, we’ve partnered with state Medicaid agencies and other healthcare providers to address health disparities in underserved communities. Recently, we expanded our partnerships to include Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs).

FQHCs are government-funded, community-based healthcare providers. They aim to promote health equity by offering affordable care on a sliding scale and prioritizing chronic disease prevention and management. They also offer comprehensive primary care services regardless of patients’ ability to pay. FQHCs may be community health centers, migrant health centers, healthcare for the homeless, and health centers for residents of public housing.

Challenges like financial constraints, lack of insurance, and a shortage of healthcare facilities and participating providers can make accessing healthcare difficult. Transportation can be an additional barrier, particularly in areas with scarce or unreliable public transportation.

We’ve worked with FQHCs to deliver cost savings, shorter wait times, appointment adherence, improved patient satisfaction, and more.

Spotlight on: CommUnityCare™ Health Centers

Lyft provides access to transportation for several community health centers across the country. One of these centers, CommUnityCare Health Centers, serves the Travis County area in Texas.

To strengthen the health and well-being of the communities they serve, CommUnityCare Health Centers provides approximately half of all local safety net primary care services. They also provide specialty services, and offer standalone centers focused on women’s health, complex care management, and dental services to the under- or uninsured.

Twenty percent of Travis County residents did not have insurance in 2021. As a result, many of these residents have difficulty accessing basic primary, dental, and preventive healthcare.

CommUnityCare Health Centers partners with Lyft to further their mission of reducing healthcare disparities. The partnership provides access to transportation — whether it’s to grocery stores, food banks and WIC programs, pharmacies, or medical appointments. It also connects residents with specialists like care managers and coordinators, community health workers, and external medical providers, as well as resources for eligibility, housing, and financial assistance.

Through their efforts to provide community members with reliable, on-demand transportation, Lyft and CommUnityCare Health Centers have provided access to tens of thousands of rides to date.
