Lyft’s NYC Data Reveals: Where New York’s Night Owls Stay Out Late

Alexis Benveniste - Dec 5, 2023

We all know that New York is the city that never sleeps — so what does it do instead? We dug into Lyft’s data to find the ten spots where Lyft riders are most likely to stay past 3 a.m.

It turns out people can be tempted to push their bedtime for: live entertainment (four of the top ten spots host events — including the top spot on our list), late-night eats and drinks, and a good outdoor space. But the number-one temptress of late-night revelry? You guessed it: dancing.

So if you’re a night owl, consider this your guide to what’s hot when it’s late in New York City.

The Late Spots

“Early a.m.” is the percentage of pickups that occurred between the hours of 3 a.m. and 7 a.m.

Night Owls’ Favorite Cocktail Bars: Mother’s Ruin, Kind Regards, and Do or Dive

Founded in 2011, Nolita’s Mother’s Ruin features an elevated cocktail menu and food service until 3:30 a.m.

Known for its relatively cheap cocktails and nostalgic decor, Do or Dive in Bed-Stuy lives up to its name. Come for the vinyl bar stools, vintage beer signs, outdoor patio, and a menu that boasts a boozy, frozen coffee.

The Lower East Side’s Kind Regards, a cocktail and oyster bar, feels simultaneously upscale and retro. While it has some cozy couched areas for lounging, the fun lights, disco balls, and checkered dance floor give it an undeniably lively atmosphere.

Night Owls’ Favorite Music Venues: Bunton’s World Famous and Cafe Erzulie

Located on the border of Bushwick and Bed-Stuy, Cafe Erzulie is known for its jazz and other live events on weeknights. On the weekends, its indoor dining area and sizable backyard transform into a nightclub. Add to that a Haitian-inspired food menu and craft cocktails, and it’s no wonder Lyft riders stay so late.

Bunton’s World Famous, owned by musician Kareem Bunton (who has collaborated with artists like Run the Jewels and TV on the Radio), is known for its ’90s vibes and up-and-coming and established DJs, so you’re bound to hear new and interesting music during your night out. Plus, there’s an outdoor space — perfect for cooling off from your sweaty dance moves.

Night Owls’ Favorite Gay Bars: Eagle NYC and Industry Bar

Gay bars are a vital part of New York culture, so it’s no surprise that they show up among the most popular late-night hangouts. Eagle NYC, located in Chelsea, is a multilevel leather/Levi bar that’s known for its dance floor, roof deck, and shirtless clientele. The spot opened as a “longshoreman’s pub” near 21st Street in 1931, was acquired and redecorated in 1970, and then moved to 28th Street and 11th Avenue in 2001.

Located in Hell’s Kitchen since 2010, Industry Bar is known for its drag events and dancing.

Night Owls’ Favorite Dance Floors: 3 Dollar Bill and Nowadays

3 Dollar Bill, the self-proclaimed “largest queer venue in Brooklyn,” opened in East Williamsburg in 2018 with a mission to celebrate queer identity. Several events take place every weekend — like speed dating and disco nights — and the venue can hold up to 625 people. Plus, 3 Dollar Bill is equipped with a full stage, live music setup, and an outdoor patio that’s open until 4 a.m.

Located in the residential neighborhood of Ridgewood, Queens (but close to the border of bustling Bushwick), Nowadays is known for its huge outdoor space and thoughtful guidelines — like no cell phone usage and minimal dance floor conversation. DJs play late into the night on weekends and bar bites are available until 1 a.m., making Nowadays a place that’s easy to enjoy and hard to leave — hence why almost half of all Lyft pickups happen after 3 a.m.

Night Owls’ Favorite Erotic Experience: The Box

If you’re looking for a unique New York experience, look no further than The Box, an exclusive Lower East Side establishment where burlesque shows and other erotica-tinged performances go into the early morning. The entertainment must be hard to walk away from since one in every two Lyft rider stays past 3 a.m. — more than at any other venue in the city — and a valiant 7% of patrons stay until 5 a.m.
