The Bay Wheels expansion into Golden Gate Park will include eight stations available 8/7/23 and four more to be added in the coming weeks. This builds on the system’s latest expansion to the Sunset neighborhood south of the park, which was announced in May.
These stations fill a critical gap in the Bay Wheels station network and create new capacity in one of the premier locations for biking in San Francisco, Golden Gate Park, which has seen increased demand for biking since the implementation of car-free JFK drive in April of 2022. Alongside the route are art installations, public pianos, rest stops, enhanced entrances, seating, lawn games, and live music. The stations will also increase access to popular destinations like the de Young Museum, California Academy of Science, San Francisco Botanical Garden, among others.
Parking for Bay Wheels in Golden Gate Park is only allowed at designated station locations, which can be found in both the Bay Wheels and Lyft apps. These designated locations include classic docking stations where both ebikes and classic bikes can be parked, and virtual stations, which are groups of bike racks available for ebike parking only.
The addition of these stations will encourage more people to get to the park on bikes for big events like Outside Lands and every day, helping to ease congestion and parking demand. Outside Lands is held at Golden Gate Park Fri, Aug 11, 2023 – Sun, Aug 13, 2023. In addition to the eight new stations that will be available in the park, Bay Wheels will have valets onsite at the intersection of JFK Avenue and Transverse Dr, on the Eastern side of JFK 12:00-11:00pm.
