Your Ebike Experience in San Francisco Just Got Better

Big news: Bay Wheels ebikes in San Francisco are getting an upgrade. We’re replacing our black ebikes with a new fleet of silver ones that offer full parking flexibility. Say goodbye to hunting for the black bike just to park off-station - our new silver ebikes now offer the same parking flexibility and smooth ride you already love.

What’s New

Upgraded ebikes
With our new fleet of ebikes, you’ll get twice the battery power, longer range, and brighter lights for foggy days.

Ebike parking flexibility
San Francisco now requires bikeshare ebikes parked outside of stations to be secured with a cable lock. Currently, only select Bay Wheels ebikes equipped with built-in cable locks can park at public racks, but more will be added as we roll out the new silver fleet.

Parking etiquette
Over time, all ebikes will include built-in cable locks. When parking, use the cable lock to secure your ebike to a public rack within the service area.
You’ll now have a better, more flexible ebike experience, whether you’re headed to a neighborhood without nearby stations, finishing a commute downtown, or tackling one of the city’s many hills.

What You Need to Know

New fleet: All-new silver ebikes are now available across the city, so you’ll no longer need to switch between two different models.

Parking flexibility: All ebikes can be parked as usual at any station in San Francisco. Ebikes with cable locks can, in addition, be parked at any public bike rack or Bay Wheels station. Just remember to check your app for designated parking areas to avoid a $2 out-of-station fee.

Rollout: Eventually, all ebikes will be equipped with cable locks and can be parked either in or out of station.

Outside SF: Riders in Daly City, Emeryville, Oakland, and Berkeley will still dock at stations as usual.

Why It Matters

Last year, riders took more than 3 million Bay Wheels trips, with upgraded ebikes chosen more than 80% of the time. Now, we’re expanding our ebike fleet with more of these upgraded ebikes, making the ride you love even more convenient.

Whether you’re commuting, running errands, or just exploring the city on two wheels, you’ll be able to park closer to your destination, and get on with your day.
