Celebrate Independent Bookstore Day at these stores that Lyft riders love

Lilian Li - Apr 25, 2024

Booklovers, assemble! It’s time to dust off space on your shelves, grab your tote bags, and get ready to celebrate Independent Bookstore Day. If you’re looking for a new favorite bookstore, here are three shops that Lyft riders love — and some ride codes for upcoming events. Happy reading!

Semicolon Books (Chicago, Illinois)

April 27: Independent Bookstore Day

Dr. Danielle Mullen, author and editor with a Ph.D. in literary theory, envisioned Semicolon Books to be welcoming and uplifting. “I wanted a place where I could show up as my full self — and where others could comfortably do the same,” says Mullen. Now it’s Chicago’s only Black woman-owned bookstore, with cozy chairs, vibrant art by Black artists, and books representing the community. In hopes of closing the racial literacy gap, Mullen reopened her bookstore as a nonprofit last year to give back to the community.

On April 27, head over to Semicolon for its reopening celebration from noon to seven. There will be books, refreshments, and lots of love for Chicago’s indie bookstores.

Bulletproof Comics (Brooklyn, New York)

May 4: Free Comic Book Day

Hank Kwon quit his Manhattan job and opened Bulletproof Comics in 1992. Nestled in Flatbush, the store is stacked with collectibles — not just comics but games, toys, magazines, and skateboards. “To have a physical store with yesteryear’s items is pretty unique,” says Kwon. Even more notable, he says, is the “safe haven” the store provides for the neighborhood kids, who shed their streetsmart personas and “let their inner geek go crazy.”

Bulletproof will celebrate Free Comic Book Day on May 4 — patrons can choose up to ten free comics (from a selection of about 100) and get them signed by their authors and artists.

RIDE CODE: COMICBOOKDAY24. Offer is valid for one Lyft ride 50% off one Lyft ride, up to $10, for the first 300 users to redeem. Code valid only on 05/04/2024 from 12:00 a.m. ET to 11:59 p.m. ET. Valid only to or from Bulletproof Comics.

Politics and Prose (Washington, D.C.)

June 22: 40th Anniversary Celebration

Despite the name — and appearances from the likes of Michelle Obama and Bill Clinton — this D.C. institution isn’t just about politics. Cofounders Bradley Graham and Lissa Muscatine have  created a space where Washingtonians can connect over literature and ideas. Curious readers will find more than books, says marketing director Glory Edim. They’ll find “a community where their love for reading is celebrated and nourished.”

You can celebrate Politics and Prose’s 40th anniversary this June 22. Bring the whole family for storytime and interactive craft activities, as well as book giveaways and author panels. It’s going to be one for the books!
